Halloween Pet Safety: Keeping Your Furry Friends Happy & Safe!
Halloween is almost here! With spooky decorations, delicious treats, costumes and plenty of excitement, it’s a fun time of year for the whole family.
But while we’re enjoying the Halloween festivities, it’s worth remembering that some of our favourite Halloween traditions can be a little overwhelming (or even dangerous!) for our furry friends.
Here are a few simple tips to help keep your cats and dogs happy, comfortable and safe this Halloween.

Keep Chocolate & Sweets Away From Curious Paws
Halloween often means plenty of chocolate, lollies and sweet treats around the house.
Unfortunately, some of these goodies aren’t safe for our pets.
Chocolate: Contains theobromine and caffeine, which are toxic to dogs and cats. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are especially dangerous.
Sugar-free sweets: Some contain xylitol (also known as birch sugar), which can cause life-threatening poisoning in dogs.
Lolly wrappers: These can become choking hazards or cause intestinal blockages if swallowed.
Raisins and grapes: Can cause serious kidney problems in dogs.
Our tip: Keep Halloween goodies in sealed containers, well out of reach of curious noses and paws. If your pet swallows something potentially toxic, contact your veterinarian immediately rather than waiting for symptoms.
And why not give your furry friend a pet-friendly treat of their own so they don’t feel left out?
Spooky Decorations & Curious Pets
Halloween decorations can be lots of fun, but some are particularly tempting for playful pets!
Dangling decorations, fake cobwebs, electrical cords and small plastic accessories can all attract unwanted attention.
A few things to remember:
Keep electrical cords tucked away from chewing pets.
Avoid placing small decorations where pets can swallow them.
Keep fake cobwebs and dangling strings out of reach.
Use battery-operated candles instead of open flames, and keep batteries securely enclosed.
If you’ve got a particularly curious cat or a puppy who loves exploring, a little extra care goes a long way!
Costumes: Cute, But Comfort Comes First!
There’s nothing quite like seeing a dog dressed as a pumpkin!
But not every pet enjoys wearing a costume, and that’s perfectly okay.
If you’re dressing your pet up this Halloween, make sure their costume:
Fits comfortably without restricting movement.
Doesn’t interfere with breathing, hearing or vision.
Doesn’t have small pieces that could be chewed off.
Doesn’t cause overheating or irritation.
Watch your pet’s body language. If they seem uncomfortable, try a festive bandana or collar instead.
Sometimes the simplest outfits are the cutest!
Trick-or-Treaters & Unexpected Visitors
The sound of the doorbell, unfamiliar visitors and excited children can be stressful for some pets.
Even normally confident dogs and cats may feel a little unsettled when there’s lots of activity around the house.
To help make the evening easier:
Set up a quiet, comfortable space away from the front door.
Provide their favourite bed, toys or enrichment activities.
Keep cats safely indoors and dogs away from frequently opening doors.
Make sure your pet’s microchip details are up to date.
A lick mat or favourite enrichment toy can be a great way to keep your dog happily occupied while the trick-or-treaters visit.
Don’t Forget Our Feline Friends!
Cats can be particularly sensitive to changes in their environment.
New decorations, unfamiliar noises and extra visitors may leave them feeling a little unsure.
Make sure your cat has somewhere quiet to retreat to, preferably with a cosy bed, fresh water and access to their litter tray.
Let them choose whether they want to join the festivities or enjoy a peaceful evening away from the action.
